York Design Awards judging is complete

Judging D

Two days’ judging of the 34 entries to this year’s York Design Awards is now complete with winners to be announced on Monday 26th June at York Racecourse.

Our thanks to architects Julian Bicknell. David Heath, Geoff Rich and Nicola Rutt for taking the time to visit every one of the entries.

Entries range from Janette Ireland’s geological map mosaic in Museum Gardens to the 150-house Derwenthorpe phase 2 development, and from the Terry’s Chocolate Works development to the refurbishment of York Theatre Royal.

Head judge Julian Bracknell said: “With eight categories to choose from we always expect great variety, and we weren’t disappointed. We’ve seen two flower beds at one end of the scale, and a housing estate of 150 houses at the other.”

He added: “Everybody clearly feels as though they’re part of York – there’s a real sense of pride and involvement.”
